What is RefWorks?

RefWorks is a web-based bibliographic management tool to organise your references and citations. It enables you to build your library of references and bibliographies so that you can export citations and format reference lists in different citation styles, including APA, MLA, Harvard, and Chicago, in your assignments and papers.

Functions of RefWorks

  • Import references directly from various databases and SearchPlus to build up your library of bibliographies and citations.
  • Generate and format reference lists in a variety of citation style, including APA, MLA, Harvard and Chicago in seconds.
  • Manage and organise references into folders for different research topics in your RefWorks library.
  • Export references and citations from your RefWorks library into your documents (with the use of Write-N-Cite and Add-on for Google Docs).
  • Access your RefWorks library anytime with the web-connected computer by login into your RefWorks account.

Register and Login to your RefWorks Account

You have to register for a personal RefWorks account at the RefWorks Login page.

For first time user, click “Create account” button to register an account with your HSMC email address.


Write-N-Cite to export references for Microsoft Word

With Write-N-Cite, you can export citation and format references list from your RefWorks library in your documents for Microsoft Word format.


Steps to download and install Write-N-Cite at your PC:

  1. Log in to your personal RefWorks account.
  2. Click on the “More” menu at the top, and then select “Tools”
  3. Scroll down to “Cite in Microsoft ”
  4. Download and install the appropriate version of Write-N-Cite for your PC.

Steps to use the Write-N-Cite for Microsoft Word

  1. Open a Microsoft Word document on your PC.
  2. Select RefWorks at the menu bar, click on “Log in” button.
  3. Log in to your RefWorks account.

Add-on to export references for Google Docs

With the Add-on, you can export citation and format references list from your RefWorks library in your documents for Google Docs format.


Steps to get the Add-on

  1. Log in to your personal RefWorks account.
  2. Click on the “More” menu at the top, and then select “Tools”
  3. Scroll down to “Cite in Google ”
  4. Click on “Get the Add-on.”
  5. Select “Free” button to install ProQuest RefWorks.

Or

  1. Open a google doc with your email account.
  2. Select Add-ons from the menu bar, click on “Get add-on.”
  3. Search for “RefWorks”
  4. Select “Free” button.
  5. Give permission to connect with ProQuest RefWorks.

Steps to use the Add-on

  1. Open a google doc with your email account.
  2. Select Add-ons from the menu bar, click on “Manage citation” under ProQuest RefWorks.
  3. Log in to your RefWorks account.
