Library Collections


Reference Collection (G/F)

The Reference Collection includes a variety of quick reference materials such as encyclopedias, dictionaries, thesauri and handbooks. The Collection is for use in the Library only.

There are also reference sources in digital format that can be accessed 24/7. A full  list  of  E-References can be found at E-Resources by Formats.


Course Reserve Collection (G/F)

The Course Reserve Collection contains materials recommended by faculty members, textbooks listed on the module outlines and titles available from Textbook Fair for course reading. Due to the heavy demand for these items, they are available for borrowing for 2 hours at a time.


Special Collections (G/F)

The Special Collections house materials that are rare and unique. Included here are significant works such as 34 autographed books by the Nobel Laureate Gao Xingjian and a rich collection of works in Chinese literature, philosophy and history donated by the Chairperson of the Chinese Department, Professor Alex Cheung Kwong Yue. Selections of scholarly publications by HSMC staff are also housed here. With the exception of Gao Xingjian Collection, materials in the Special Collections are available for borrowing for 2 hours at a time. Please ask for assistance at G/F Service Counter.


Circulation Collection (1/F)

The Circulation Collection is the main book collection available for borrowing. At present, the books are organized by Library of Congress Classification (LCC).


Serials Collection (1/F)

The Serials Collection consists of periodicals, magazines and a selection of local and overseas newspapers. Back issues of periodicals and magazines are available to use outside the library. For newspapers, up to 3 months of back issues are kept in the Library. In addition, a wealth of journals, magazines, local and foreign newspapers are available electronically. They can be browsed online by title from the E-Journals A-Z.


CFA & CPA Collections (1/F)

  • CFA Collection

This collection consists of books issued by the CFA Institute. Some items in this collection are also available in electronic format. In addition, a few supplementary publications for helping candidates to sit the CFA examination are also kept there.

  • CPA Collection

This collection comprises learning resources issued by the Hong Kong Institute of Certified Public Accountants for its CPA Qualification Program. A set of the latest editions is kept in the CPA Collection.


Multi-media Collection (2/F)

The Multi-media Collection provides a range of media resources in different formats. Currently holding over thousands volumes of DVDs, VCDs, CDs and CD-ROMs, this growing collection consists of documentary in various subject areas as well as feature films and TV programs for teaching, learning and recreation.


Institute for Chinese Language and Culture (2/F)

The Institute consists of a range of monographs and multi-media resources for supporting the learning and teaching of Chinese language and culture. This collection is particularly strong on materials for the studying of Putonghua.


English Language Centre (2/F)

The Centre houses an assortment of books and media resources devoted to the teaching and studying of the English language and culture.
